Music rock(s) the world || 5 Chilean bands to watch

GEPE
Un fel de tata lor, al tuturor.

Online radiostation curating the best new music for the music aficionados. Don’t Get Bored.

Yet, surprisingly, I did get a tad bored. Or maybe I got curious and snoopy, after all, haven’t you ever wondered who are the Backstabbers and the Amsterdams of Chile or Poland? I sure did, so let’s find out what rocks all over the world and never get bored, shall we?

Give a big hand of applause for Chile.

It might not have been the most intellectual way to spend my afternoons when I was 13 or 14, but now that I think of it, screw Duolingo, telenovelas are the best way to learn Spanish!

While we started off with the curious case of Japan, but we have yet to improve our Japanese skills, it’s time to turn our ears to Chile, totally random and based on a 2013 report by PwC concluding that Latin America was set to become the fastest-growing region in the world in terms of spending for media and entertainment over the next five years. Furthermore, over the last years, Latin America has also seen a surge in internet use, mobile phone ownership and social networking, all ripe for the consumption and marketing of music.

So, what are these Chilean kids listening to these days then? After a great Skype call with Oliver Knust from Discos Rio Bueno and an amazing introduction to the Chilean music scene, I endorse and adore the following 5 bands.

ASTRO
According to their Facebook page, they have a “speed metal tropical sound”, but there’s so much to their sound than that: it also lingers, in a nonmetallic polar sort of way.

MKRNI
Going all vegan, MKRNI and electrolatino.

NIÑO COHETE
Founded back in 2010 in Concepción, Nino Cohete’s first and only (so far) album Aves de Chile was recorded in a cabin near Lake Lanalhue, proving that their spaceless sound is anything but provincial.

FARMACOS

Should all these songs make you a bit melancholic, despair not, the last tune will make you lap dance and by that I mean dance around your laptop, you dirty minds! Or maybe it’s been my guilty pleasure only!

GEPE
Proof that the last one shall be the first, Gepe has been described as the “new guru of Chilean folk” whatever that implies. Fact is, he got me hooked, naturally!
